FLY ASH

 Fly ash is a fine, powdery byproduct generated during the combustion of pulverized coal in coal-fired boilers. Captured through electrostatic precipitators, baghouses, or cyclones, fly ash is valued for its properties as a supplementary cementing material (SCM). Its application in concrete and construction not only reduces costs but also offers numerous performance and environmental benefits. 

•  Pozzolanic Activity: Reacts with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) in cement hydration to form calcium silicate hydrate (CSH), enhancing strength and durability.
• Thermal Performance: Reduces hydration heat, preventing thermal cracking in large concrete pours.
• Environmental Benefit: Being a byproduct, its use reduces landfill dependency and lowers embodied energy in construction materials.

 Fly ash plays a critical role in a wide range of applications:

• Concrete Production:

1. Used as a partial replacement for Portland cement (20–30% replacement, with higher rates possible).
2. Enhances the workability, strength, and durability of concrete.

• Construction Materials:

1. Integral in blended cement, mosaic tiles, hollow blocks, and lightweight aggregates.

• Road and Pavement Construction:

1. PCC pavements benefit from reduced costs and improved longevity.

Fly ash is classified based on chemical composition and lime content:

                     1. Class F Fly Ash:
                    Source: Produced from burning anthracite or bituminous coal. 

• Characteristics:
  • Low lime content (<15%).
  • High silica, alumina, and iron content (>70%).
• Applications:
  • Ideal for use in sulphate-rich environments (soil and groundwater).
  • Addresses summer concreting challenges.

                     2. Class C Fly Ash:

• Source: Derived from sub-bituminous or lignite coal.
• Characteristics:
  • High lime content (>15%, up to 30%).
  • Unique self-hardening property due to high calcium oxide (CaO).
• Applications:
  • Preferred for early strength development.
  • Widely used in building materials requiring quick setting.
