Silica Flour / Powder Grade Selection

Silica Flour: How to Specify Mesh, Chemistry, and a Trial Grade

Prepare a silica flour RFQ that connects powder sizing, chemistry, and your ceramic, coating, or filler trial.

Give the powder grade a process brief

The silica flour range lists 80, 300, and 500 mesh options and custom micron grading. Start an inquiry with the intended use and feed form so the supplier can discuss a particular powder grade. A coating formulation and a ceramic body need their own trial brief, even when both inquiries say silica flour.

  • State the application, current powder specification, and the reason for evaluating a new grade.
  • Identify whether you want one listed mesh option or a defined micron distribution.
  • Share the powder attributes your process will actually assess, such as appearance, dispersion, or residue.

Make the size requirement measurable

Put the required sizing report in the RFQ alongside the grade name. Ask how the mesh designation is measured and which sieve or particle-size method will support the offered powder. If your existing specification is in microns, request the supplier's measured distribution for that basis.

  • Write the sieve designation and required passing or retained limits, where your process uses sieve acceptance.
  • For a micron specification, name the distribution measures and test method you require.
  • Ask for a report tied to the proposed sample and agree which size result will govern acceptance.

Read chemistry as a grade reference

The published product record reports SiO2 at 99.10% and Fe2O3 at 0.036%. These are reference figures for discussion. Ask which chemistry limits apply to the powder being quoted and whether the sample documentation contains measured results for that specific grade.

  • List your required SiO2 and impurity limits, including Fe2O3 where it is part of your acceptance brief.
  • Confirm how whiteness and moisture will be reported if your formulation requires those checks.
  • Request the selected grade's TDS and sample results; the published sample COA is a representative reference.

Carry the approved trial into the order

Record the sample identifier, powder size, chemistry basis, and trial outcome together. Before ordering bulk material, turn the accepted trial into a written specification with agreed sampling and document requirements. The listed packing options are 50 kg and jumbo bags; confirm the format against your powder handling setup.

  • Define trial quantity and the process observations that determine approval.
  • Ask how the trial grade will be identified in the quotation, order, and lot documentation.
  • Specify bag size, unloading needs, destination, quantity, and the required dispatch window in the RFQ.
